Understanding Stress

We’ve always had stress, the triggers are simply different!

As Prehistoric man we were threatened by the environment – Sabre Toothed Tigers, Woolly Mammoths, ice glaciers … now our threats are simply workload, emails, iPhones, www, You Tube, the 1001 tasks that we give ourselves to do, our commitments and responsibilities to our family, work, home, health, body etc. The list is never-ending … as I take a big breath thinking of all the things that I haven’t yet done today.

We’ve been taught that we need to manage stress, as though it is inevitable and we might as well accept it and get on with it. This is a misconception … stress just needs to be understood, once you understand it you can get rid of it.

If we go back to a typical definition of stress, you might read, “Stress occurs when pressure exceeds your perceived ability to cope” – S Palmer 1999 or perhaps “Stress is the failure of an organism to respond appropriately to mental, emotional or physical demands, whether actual or imagined”. In both of these definitions you will notice that it is a perception, whether real or imagined if you think you are in danger then you are in danger.

So the key to removing Stress is to increase the level of your awareness around your thoughts, once you are aware of what you are thinking you can change it and in doing so, you can then decide whether you want to remain stressed or you want to change your thoughts and move out of stress.

So start today

  • Pay attention to what you are thinking
  • Check if you are in a stressed state
  • Choose to change your thoughts and move away from stress
  • Find 20 mins a day to relax – which means doing NOTHING just for 20 minutes, yes NOTHING, no TV, no reading – Simply NOTHING
