Introducing Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is simply using language to

  • Show you a different way of evaluating yourself and the world around you
  • Experience emotions and thoughts that support a positive outcome
  • Behave positively so you enjoy rewarding results

It is nothing more than a process which offers you different perspectives, gives you choices and options that are supportive of what you want so you get the results you expect.

It teaches you to communicate with yourself and others in a way that allows you to achieve excellent results in every area of your life.

Neuro is your neurological system. We experience the world through our 5 senses – what we see, hear, feel, smell and taste. These are translated into our conscious and unconscious thoughts. These thoughts activate our neurological system which then drives our body, emotions and our behaviours.

Linguistic refers to the way in which we use language to make sense of the world. It is how language influences our experiences, thoughts, emotions and behaviours.

Think about a time you were really happy – how are you describing it? what does your voice sound like? what words are you using? what posture are you holding?

Now think about a time you were a little upset – how are you describing it? what does your voice sound like? what words are you using? what posture are you holding?

Do you notice the difference?

Programming addresses how we mentally represent the experience. Your thinking patterns or programs help you make decisions, solve problems, learn, evaluate and analyse to get the results you are expecting.

If your thinking patterns give you the results you want then that is absolutely fine, if you are experiencing anything else then this is where your thinking patterns are adjusted so that the results are closer to what you want.

The Background of NLP Therapy

NLP is based upon the the study of the factors which account for either success or failure in human performance. In 1972 Richard Bandler enlisted the help of John Grinder to study people they considered to be excellent communicators and agents for change. They studied Virginia Satir (developer of Conjoint Family Therapy), Fritz Perls (founder of Gestalt Therapy) and Milton Erickson (responsible for Clinical Hypnotherapy). Since those days, the field of NLP encompasses many disciplines from all over the world, all with one key objective – find excellence, study or ‘model’ the behaviour and thinking styles of this excellence and reproduce it.

The Foundations of NLP

Neuro Linguistic Programming is built around 4 key principles

Rapport – Learn to build relationships with others and more importantly yourself easily and effectively, in order to start getting closer to the results you are expecting.

Sensory Awareness – Learn to pay attention to the world around you, using all your senses – sight, sound, touch, taste and smell. Learn to finely tune and develop your sensory perception to change how you approach a situation, event or person.

Outcome Thinking – Learn to start thinking about what you want rather than what you have. Start making the best choices to get closer to the results you want and expect.

Behavioural Flexibility – Learn to do something different to get better results. Identify what isn’t working well then learn how to change what you are doing, so you get closer to the results you want.

NLP Manipulation and Integrity

You may have heard the word “manipulation” associated with NLP, so to put the record straight … We influence our environment, our bodies and the people around us all the time

  • When you breathe, you manipulate air to take out  impurities and use the oxygen
  • When you eat, you manipulate food to take out nutrients to feed your body
  • When you talk, you manipulate your thoughts, messages and outcomes
  • When you pick a flower you are manipulating what the plant needs to do next ….

We manipulate all the time consciously and unconsciously to get what we want. So manipulation is only questionable when you manipulate to get what you want at the expense of another. If the intention is win/win then this means you are manipulating with integrity.

As your Transformational Coach – I will manipulate your thoughts, your behaviours and your habits with positive intent. The outcome I want is for you to have the life you want – it is purely based on win/win and this means I work with COMPLETE INTEGRITY.
